11th July 2011 Being Wild, Noisy And Regardless - On A Harley Davidson
It's another very exciting day today in Barcelona. The city has been in recently years consolidated as the head of the Harley Davidson capital of Europe, but consider it only as the strategic and business marketing is forgetting the thousands of people devoted to this most prestigious, notorious and nosiest motorcycles. For this year's gathering there are more than 11,500 Davidsons concentrated in Barcelona centre, 15% more than last year, proud and enthusiastic protagonists taking part in the 'round-around' of 13 kilometres from the starting to the final point at the Montjuic Stadium.
It could seem strange to the native Catalans with the American flag of civil war but the image of the entire grand thoroughfare taken up head to tail by the roaring 'army' on motocycles is mighty powerful and impressive. Not quite the image of Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda, the profiles here of the motorcyclists of Harley Davidson is quite different from the desperate cross-border, lawless fighters. The typical European is much more affable than the Americans.
These are people who play rebels only at weekends, or simply aficionados of motorcycles and motorcycling, and collectors of antique Harley Davison, including a 3 wheeler of the year 1936, that once belonged to the Los Angeles police.
The summed-up profiles are: Around 50 the average age, mostly male piloting with the female at the back cheering and blowing kisses to the masses of spectators, media reports, photographers and TV cameras. There's also a reversal of rolls - with female pilots, making the statement that it's not exclusively a 'Man Thing'
I would surely have liked to shed my image somehow established by I have no idea whom or why, over many years, of being 'a lady', taking the front seat, or even the back seat, and whip around Barcelona amongst the thousand of others, with my hair and care blown free by the wind, and elation of absolute freedom in my heart, just for a day, being wild, noisy and regardless.
