He
has to be the luckiest man indeed, having had 52 heart attacks and
still lives to tell his story. Just a few days ago he had yet another
heart-attack, upon finishing a hearty 5 course meal in a restaurant and
was sent to hospital. While in the emergency room waiting for the doctor
on duty to check on him, he seemed to recover sufficiently, and wanted
to leave but was stopped, told to stay put for the doctor to look him
over. He was then recognized by the doctor in charge as being the same
person he had attended a couple of occasions before, at different times
and in different locations.
Further investigation into his medical history and personal data revealed this man of 52 years old (52 attacks in 52 years, coincidence?) to be physically healthy in every way, with no symptoms whatsoever of having had a heart attack on that day, or on any other day. He had simply faked it to avoid paying the restaurant bill! It further revealed that immediately before he went to the restaurant, he had also had another 'heart attack' in a taxi that took him to the area where the restaurant was. The taxi driver let him off in the midst of the confusion and fright, had taken off without getting the fare. It didn't take too long when the police was called, and further investigation on their part had found him to have had a record to date of similar fiascos done in the past years, totalling 52 heart attacks, all with the same tactic, to avoid paying bills of mainly transport, bars and restaurants. It has become sort of his hobby or pastime. While I lived in Hong Kong, I had witnessed, over a period of time, several 'incidents' how a pregnant woman suddenly clutched her bulging tummy and moaned pitifully, seemingly not able to keep her feet steady. Some passers-by would approach her offering support or whatever they could do to lessen her discomfort, and almost inevitably someone would suggest she should go to the hospital immediately, and proceeded to call her a cab. She would then refused, saying she had left home without her purse. There would also be a kind somebody who would flag down a taxi anyway, and gave her some money for the fare, even extra for her to return home later after the hospital visit. Then another day, another area, the same street scene would be replayed following the exact script. This time though, the man has been formally charged. If found guilty, he might have to serve a 2 year and 9 months sentence. The story reminds me of some celebrity whose name I prefer not to mention here, who said, when asked about his health, "Apart from a heart attack or two every now and then, I feel young and fit as ever."
