High Tech Glasses

 photo Mar17D_zps1eba5836.jpg
For Christmas a few years ago I was given a pair of very expensive (€650) and absolutely gorgeous sunglasses, encrusted with precious coloured crystals. I have never used them, not even once to show them off, as I can't wear glasses of any kind without falling over my own feet. Seems like it's not much point keeping that pair any more as the newer and much more practical glasses are available on the market now, incorporated with the latest high technology, and at a much more reasonable price of €169.

These new CK (Calvin Klein) glasses offer the possibility of keeping data, images, video clips and music, thanks to the memory USB of 4 CB, very discreetly integrated in the plate of the logo, on the right arm (pivot? leg? wing? What the heck do you call the parts that rests on the ears on each side of your face?) of the glasses. It's versatile, practical, and rather attractive. This new collection consists of 2 unisex models. One more classic, rectangular, is ck3083S-USB, in black and red. The other follows the geometric form, but more retro and oval in shape, the ck3084S-USB, in black and pearl.

This collection of sunglasses are graduated, sexy and city chic, aimed for the younger public, with the accessible price tag at €169. Quite a bargain I think.

Do Not Stand At My Grave & Weep ...

 photo Mar17C_zpsb6a97a87.jpg
Do not stand at my grave and weep is a poem, written by Mary Elizabeth Frye. Although of disputed origin until later in her life, Mary Frye's authorship was confirmed in 1998 after research by Abigail Van Buren, a newspaper columnist.

An early version, printed by others on postcards:
Do not stand at my grave and weep;
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush

Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.

Her later confirmed version:

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am in a thousand winds that blow,
I am the softly falling snow.

I am the gentle showers of rain,
I am the fields of ripening grain.
I am in the morning hush,
I am in the graceful rush

Of beautiful birds in circling flight,
I am the starshine of the night.
I am in the flowers that bloom,

I am in a quiet room.

I am in the birds that sing,
I am in each lovely thing.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there. I do not die.

Vintage Cinema Revisited

 photo Mar17B_zps9b7a0bc7.jpg
In Figueras, less than half an hour's drive from my home in Roses, there is going to be a Collector's Fair of old cinematographic posters, and everything for the die-hard movie fans, collectors, aficionados of cinema relics or graphics, the initiated, the knowledgeable, or simply the curious. All have the near sure possibility to find the piece missing from their private collection, or something they didn't even know the existence of, to add to their collection.

Besides, the Fair has another ingredient, that of solidarity, as the benefits are destined to finance the restoration of the glass showcases of the Casino Menestral Figuerene, one of the principal cultural institutions of the capital ampurdanesa, my area. It was founded in 1856, awarded by the Cruz of Saint George in 2004, the Menestral offers non-profit cultural activities, formative or social, and is the meeting point for generations for people in this area.

For several years this modernistic building, constructed in 1904 by the famous architect Josep Boris, has been under repair and reform, but the work stopped a few months ago due to the crisis and lack of financial support. It's a shame for the numerous members and local citizens, who had decided to organise the Fair by popular request, with the hope to be able to resume the repair project.

The initiative is organised by the board of the casino and the collector Luis Benejam, proprietor of more than 25,000 cinematographic references in paper: posters, hand programmes, pamphlets, postcards, and other promotional paraphernalia. There would be 30 stands / kiosks, offering 1.500 original posters of films of all categories in different eras, from 1960 till the present day. There are also some vintage classics before this period, like Ben-Hur, of the 50's, but the poster conserved is the one made for the reposition afterwards.

The posters include the ones from other countries not just of Hollywood, all of the classic format of 70 x 100 centimetres, at prices between €10 to €40.

Kiss Of Life - Remembering Rocco Morabito

 photo Mar17A_zps1c461c2e.jpg
Rocco Morabito, premiered photographer with a Pulitzer in 1968, passed away at the age of 88, in 2009 in his native home Jacksonville, Florida. His most dramatic instant shot 'Kiss of Life' went around every corner of the world bringing him the well deserved acknowledgement of a photographer that has dedicated his life to journalism of the street.

As early as at the age of 9, he was a newspaper delivery boy of the local paper Jacksonville Journal, leading to him working for that same paper for the next 42 years, 33 of which as a photographer. He served in the Air Force during the Second World War, as artillery man in the bomber B-17.

'Kiss of life' was the explicit name with which the graphic editor of his paper, Bob Pate, titled the image, one of the most known in the world of journalism. The scene was the cover of the Jacksonville Journal, but no one had expected the repercussion that it had until it was selected by a national news agency, that distributed it all over the country. Within a couple of days it was reproduced in all papers in most part of the world. The following year, 1968, it won the Pulitzer prize in the category of Spot News Photography.

The image showed the exact moment in which J.D. Thompson gave the mouth to mouth to his coworker, Randall Champion, who had just suffered a strong electric shock, while working on the upper part of an electric pole. Morabito had just returned from covering information on the train strike for his paper and witnessed the accident. He radioed from his car to alert the emergency, and immediately photographed the heroic intent of rescue.

The Historic Society of Jacksonville rendered homage to Rocco Morabito with a documentary of his famous photography, including his many other notable work. His family and friends remember him as an amiable and caring man, very modest, to the extent that he felt a bit uncomfortable when people are forever talking about his Pulitzer prize.

Over the years, that special image has served as example in the study courses of the electric companies, including the Red Cross. To him, the only important message about that photo was that 'someone is helping someone'.

Computer & Other Nonsense

The computer ~

** At the source of every error which is blamed on the computer, you will find at least two human errors, including the error of blaming it on the computer.

** I wish life had an UNDO function.

** If your computer says, "Printer out of Paper," this problem cannot be resolved by continuously clicking the "OK" button.

** "Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning."

** As a computer, I find your faith in technology amusing.

** Three things are certain: Death, taxes, and lost data. Guess which has occurred.

A program is a device used to convert data into error messages.

Gender of flies ~

A woman walked into the kitchen to find her husband stalking around with a fly swatter.
“What are you doing?” She asked.
“Hunting Flies” He responded.
“Oh. Killing any?” She asked.
“Yep, 3 males, 2 Females,” he replied.
Intrigued, she asked. “How can you tell them apart?”
He responded, “3 were on a beer can, 2 were on the phone.”

The only love ~

Wife : "How many women have you slept with?"
Husband : "Only you Darling; with all the others, I stayed awake!"
