19th Feb 2012 Dinner With Mystery & Crime

Feb 19A

An Italian company called 'Joint Events', has brought to Barcelona at the end of last year an interesting proposal, offering dinner and spectacle to turn diners, in between courses, to become detectives for the night, to resolve a mysterious or strange crime before the dessert is served.

This idea, or one might call it entertainment, or simply a game, is new for Spain, but had existed in England, as a house game, with one of the dinner guest 'murdered', and the surviving diners, with certain clues provided here and there, tried to pinpoint the murderer.
What 'Joint Events' offers is for me more interesting, more like an entertainment for the evening as, instead of the clues written in bits of paper scattered round the house, the diners will watch an one-act play, also projected on a gigantic screen. You are invited to watch carefully and be mindful of every detail, as the clues are provided in the play.

The first play tonight is called 'A glass too many', in Spanish (49,99€) The diners can talk to the actors (in character) and amongst fellow diners, each provided with a little note-book, their only 'tool', to jolt down what they consider important clues to help solve the mystery.
The 2nd play is on the 25th this month, in the Restaurant 106, 'Who has killed the Wizard of Oz? The magician discovers that the boss of a gang of assassins has called a meeting to be held in a train, but he was murdered in the middle of the night. Could the case be solved before the dessert?

Shows will be presented twice a week, one in Spanish, the other in Catalan. Advanced Reservation is necessary. Price: 49.99 to 60€.

Into the 4th day of the Roses Carnival. Lively music is still blasting out in the streets through loudspeakers everywhere, and many people, young and old, are still wearing their fancy costumes, although the main parade was over. The very extravagant costumes were often painstakingly put together, as soon as one carnival is over, preparation for the next is started, during the whole year by some tireless and very patient wives or mothers; some are commissioned by specialized shops.

These high-spirited people would wander about in the streets during these few days still full of all sorts activities, entering bars and restaurants or even go to work with their costumes on, including staff in shops, even official offices like the Town Hall, Police Station, banks, hospitals, Post offices, with permission, or indulgence, or simply with a blind eye, of their directors, managers or bosses. Many shops and establishments,, balconies or front doors of private houses are decorated with colourful and cheerful adornment too, some artistic others in abandoned hazardous fashion.

I danced in the middle of the street this morning, a showy Paso-Doble, with a gigantic polar bear, and later kissed by 7 huge bright green frogs. One of them planted the kiss on my lips, squeezed me tightly in an embrace, and made a suggestive wink with his huge, bulging red eye before he hopped on his way. Could that be the Prince I have been waiting for all my life I wondered?

The warm sun, the bubbling gaiety in the atmosphere, the early morning dance is just the most wonderful way to wake up to. I feel happy, even if the frog is just a frog.
