It seems that the French now wants to address all women as Madame and doing away with Mademoiselle, which were applicable till now to young or single ladies. The intention is to make no distinction of their civil status. In the past centuries, the different addresses were obligatory and considered normal here in Spain.
Maurice Chevaliere (I adore him!) sang a song called 'Mademoiselle of Paris' and Marcel Proust wrote: 'I had doubt whether to say Madame or mademoiselle, and that makes me blush'. The wrong addressing is embarrassing as it often happens when you say Madame if the lady addressed is unmarried, or vice versa.
In Spain, one simply ask if unsure: 'Pardon me, should I address you as Señora or Señorita?' But in the past, here too, making a mistake was considered very rude and unforgivable. Some reckoned that if a woman, however old, got annoyed to be addressed as Señora as it put her virginity in question!! How time has changed. Nowadays if you as much as imply that a girl is a virgin, the young lady feels insulted!!!
