Isn't life amazing? There's still so much to be discovered. Every time some new form of life is discovered, new only in the sense that we have not been aware of it till now, but some of them had existed thousands even millions of years before us!! The wonder of it is, how is it that we had taken so long to discover their existence? Not to mention those who became extinct long before now and we never even knew about.
According to the conclusion of a study carried out by investigators of Canada and America, not made know before now, is the most complete discovery in the official record of the variety of lives there are on the planet, including on air, earth and ocean. A staggering figure of 8.7 million different species! Personally, I don't think I can count over a hundred!! If I concentrate and force myself very hard, up to 200 maybe.
Of that 8.7 million, the report says, there might be a margin of error of 1.3 million up or down, and only 10% of which is catalogued. The rest are never discovered or, simply, not noticed. Most of these are, logically, of very small size, like insects, crustaceans, deep sea marine creatures and lichen, like alga and fungus.
** One of the most recent find is the Mongoose of Durrel. Discovered in the 21st century.
** A film crew making a documentary about cetaceans, marine mammals, in the south of the island of Tenerife, found the remains of a giant octopus floating on the water, an adult female, calculated to be 8 metres long in life. It's in good conservation, still preserving the original pigmentation, although it had lost part of the tentacles and the eyes, which were very big, about the size of a basket ball.
Never before had any sighting been documented of such a mythical live giant octopus although the effort search and investigation had first started as early as Nov. 1861, by different expeditions in Canaries, Cantabria and New Zealand.
** Just 2 days ago, a enormous marine crocodile was captured live, in the south of Philippines, after 3 weeks of search and 2 previous failures. It weighs 1.075 kilos and 6,4 metres long. It's a male of about 50 years old. It would not be sacrificed but destined to be a tourist attraction in the Nature Park in the Island of Palawan. The authorities assured that it's the largest of it's kind in the world captured alive.
