21st July 2012 Old Aunt Mildred

July 21B
Ageing Aunt Mildred was a 93 year old woman,
who was particularly despondent
over the recent death of her husband.
She decided that she would just kill herself
and join him in death.

Thinking that it would be best to get it over with quickly,
she took out his old army pistol and made
the decision to shoot herself in the heart,
since it was badly broken in the first place.

Not wanting to miss the vital organ and become
a vegetable and burden to someone,
she called her doctor's office to inquire
just exactly where the heart would be on a woman.

The doctor said: 'Your heart is just below
your left breast.' Later that night ...
Mildred was admitted to the hospital
with a gunshot wound to her knee!

An old couple in their 80's were found dead in their own apartment in Barcelona, in advanced state of decomposition. The preliminary forensic investigation indicated that the woman died of suffocation, probably by a pillow held over her face, in the hands of her husband. He lay close to her with his left arm holding her, & his right must have fired the fatal shot at his own temple. There was no suicide note. The initial finding also fixed the time of the tragedy to have happened 4-6 weeks before.

It's doubly tragic that their son, who lived only 22 kilometres away, nor their daughter who lived a mere 19 blocks down the road, had not thought to call or visit the parents during all those weeks! Nor any of the neighbours. Some admitted having wondered about the long absence of sight & sound of the couple but, obviously, no one was curious enough to knock at their door, to see if they were ill or needing any assistance. They told the police that the old lady suffered Alzheimer. The alarm was only given because of the foul smell mentioned between a few neighbours & one eventually alerted the police with his " complaint " the police said.

The theory was that the old man was finding it more & more difficult to look after his sick wife, on top of having to care for the day to day running of the house. He himself being a very old man, he had probably worried that should he die first, the wife would be in a very much more abject & hopeless situation.

I quietly wept for them, for myself, for the callousness of humanity in so many who hold fast the " Everyone for himself " doctrine, for the modern world which shelves old fashioned values to make room for trivialities.

To me at least, the death embrace showed him as an eternal lover, not a murderer. One could say he died for her.

21st July 2012 Where Ignorance Is Bliss, It's Folly To Be Wise

July 21
This morning in a café, I overheard some English people at a table near me ending a conversation by one of them saying: " Well, ignorance is bliss." before they got up & left.

I am often doubtful about how valid this statement is. True perhaps for some people, at some time, I suppose. Especially when they feel gaining that knowledge of whatever is too much of a hard task, or that they suspect they would not be happy with the truth if they dig deep, or that to achieve it is beyond their ability or capability.

Personally I would rather endure the frustration of failure than the gnawing suspicion that had I tried harder, I might have succeeded gaining that knowledge. But that is not to say I am not aware of my limitations.

I enjoy reading & writing for instance. Time & again over the years quite a few friends had earnestly suggested I should write a book, or at least start with what I know best, my own biography. I had gone so far as quietly asking myself " Why not ? " a few times. But I know why not - I am just not good enough as a writer. Not according to my definition of a good writer, & I see no point whatsoever being a mediocre or a bad one.

I admire greatly & never cease to be fascinated by the succinct yet concise use of words or phrases with which some authors can, effortlessly, express complex feelings, or describe intriguing scenes & tell a complicated story, but I would have needed 2-3 paragraphs or even pages, yet still less effective.

Having books published or having them hailed as best sellers of the year does not mean, to my way of thinking, that these authors are good & their work masterpieces. Very often it just means that they have searched the market well, & have produced the kind of stuff that are sure money makers, aiming at certain kind of hungry readers, who long to have their desires or fantasies fed by things they lack in real life.

I better limit myself to writing Blogs for the time being ...
