10th June 2012 Kienzle Clock - Inauguration-Exhibition

June 10C

This was at the exhibition of Kienzle I talked about earlier, with press conference for the inauguration ceremony.

The patron was so pleased with the advertisement I designed & the satisfactory result, they had organised a string of publicity events, one of which is: they put up another advertisement on all the papers with a "puzzle" titled "who is the girl inside the clock?" Below that question a picture of me "wearing" a clock made by cardboard, painted, but showing only my legs.

A few clues were given inviting the public to guess the identity of the girl. These clues ran along the lines of : a lady well known...seen on TV commercials & lots of papers...cover girl...recently spotted in such & such a place ... etc. A prize of a very ornate gold plated clock specially designed for the occasion will be awarded to the 1st winner by lucky draw, & a watch for the 2nd & 3rd.

I came out of the clock after a few days during the ceremony attended by all press media in front of invited guests & a selected public, to give out prizes, to receive my own (a beautiful & expensive watch naturally) & be crowned " Miss Kienzle"

I have been sorting out my old Blogs for the past 5 years (originally on Yahoo's 360), throwing out some and keeping others re-posting here to group them together in one place. This is one of them.

" With Kienzle You are at home anywhere! " So says the advertisement.

I was running a modelling agency at the time as well as training models and being one myself. Kienzle was a very well known Swiss firm that makes clocks & watches. I was asked to be the image of their advertising campaign, amongst other publicity activities, to appear with a large wall clock of theirs, sitting down with my head against the clock "lovingly". Now how can any one really look and feel "loving" at a clock beats me.

I counter-suggested putting the clock up somehow on a rock in the wild, with greenery to hang it up, me in evening wear & high heels, totally incongruous with the setting. Then the above slogan as the only text. They approved delightedly, this picture was the result.

Needless to say, I charged them handsomely for advertisement design on top of my modelling fee.

10th June 2012 'Work Of The Chinese'

June 10A
I never did find out why that in Spain, any work that's difficult, lengthy, tricky or thankless is called 'Work Of The Chinese' The photo below is one of the examples.

A bank in Sichuan, China, received recently a whole bag of cut-up, 100 Yuan denominated bills totalling in the value of 50,000 Yuans from a desperate man, begging the entity to 'Do something about it', helping him in whatever way to recover the worth. He explained that his wife, in a fit of fury and hysteria during a quarrel, had used a pair of scissors cutting up the bank notes into smithereens, the total saving of his whole life time.
50,000 Yuans
The bank put the hands of most employees at work - the authentic 'Work of the Chinese'. In the first 6 hours they had merely managed putting together just one whole bill ... if you multiply by 6 hours for the remaining 499 bills ... !!! Even though, the work gets slightly easier along the way when more bills are put back together. This got to be the world's most complicated puzzle.

If I understand correctly, as long as 3 quarters of a torn bill showing the numbers that are usually at both ends, the note is by law accepted as valid. Hope it's so in China too. Especially for the poor man. I reckon the silly wife well deserves a little more prolonged anxiety.

10th June 2012 My Glasgow Experience

June 10

By pure coincidence Glasgow kept popping up the last 3 days, on different days, by different people & on separate occasions. Before that I had not thought about it at all for years, nor heard it mentioned. All sorts of faded memories associated with Scotland, places I have been, people I have met, flicked through my mind suddenly in quick succession, like rewinding a documentary tape, with images racing through, too fast to capture the individual scenes or events, but certain faces & places jumped up like the highlighting button had been hit, and the faces would suddenly be connected with events, which would in turn lead to the locations. As if by magic, all is spread out before me, so fresh & vivid like everything had happened only yesterday.

The very 1st time I went to Glasgow some years ago, I had been forewarned that it's a seaport, more industrial than cultural, that many people are a bit rough, blunt, or not too friendly with foreigners.

After a leisurely late lunch & wandering about the city streets for a while, I noticed that one of the buttons of my favourite cardigan had fallen off, lost. I was quite upset as it's a new cashmere cardigan, rather expensive one. Then I spotted a little shop, sort of a haberdashery but with other odds & ends.

They didn't have what I needed but the lady in the shop told me about another shop not far away she said, & proceeded to describe how I could get there. I thanked her & was just about to leave, she called out: " Wait a minute" then, glancing at her wall clock, she said she would make a call to that shop to tell them I was on my way there, & would they shut up shop a few minutes later. She explained to me that all shops closed at 5.30 p.m. & it was then 5.15 already. The other shop said YES"! I thanked her profusely for her thoughtfulness & hurried on my way.

I arrived at this other shop at 5.45 having had some difficulty finding it. The lady there welcomed me with a big smile, & on her counter there were 2 trays with assorted buttons already set out for me!! I didn't get the button as none was suitable, but I was so impressed by both ladies' kindness & felt so grateful I bought a knitted woollen lamb which I see now everyday in my bedroom. Somehow the missing button was not so important any more. I left the shop very happy & still think of the 2 ladies now almost like friends.

Why on earth people think Glasgow was such a rough town with rude & unfriendly people??
