I
watched a film by the famous film director Quentin Tarantino, a
war drama, about a group of Jewish-American soldiers known as "The
Bastards", chosen specifically to spread fear throughout the Third Reich
by scalping and brutally killing Nazis, in Nazi-occupied France during
World War II. Made in 2009, starred Brad Pitt, Christoph Waltz, Diane
Kruger and Eli Roth.
It
was loosely based on the Italian film 'Quel Maledetto Treno' ( That
Damned Armoured Train - 1978 ), taking certain historic license. The
allied soldiers were joined by an activist of the resistance to
perpetrate attacks against Nazis. At the same time a young woman was
seeking revenge for the assassination of her parents.
The
film contains memorable scenes, much violence but, on the whole, also
rather entertaining. Another interesting incentive is that it mixed
different languages, each character speaks his own tongue, instead of
the norm in American films where the audience is supposed to perfectly
understand that all foreigners speak English (or rather, American) due
to the 'respect' by the film makers and they must also, in their mind,
that in the scenes they are supposed to be each speaking in their own
language. Sometimes they make the actors speak with an accent as if
that explains it all. Confusing and condescending to the audience.
It
won the only Oscar for the acting of Christoph Waltz, although the film
was nominated in another 7 categories. I think it deserved more.
