During a casual chat with a friend about everything and mostly nothing, we came upon the word 'erotica'. My friend said he couldn't distinguish the meaning of that with 'eroticism' adding: 'don't you just hate all the words that end with '...cism'? Makes anything simple complicated and baffling. Yeah!
As far as I know, eroticism is an aesthetic focus on sex or sexual desire, especially the feelings of anticipation of sexual activity. It is not only the state of arousal and anticipation, but also the attempt through various means to incite those feelings. While erotica refers to books or art containing an erotic theme. focus on sex or sexual desire
I think there are at least 3 types of erotica: the closest to what is basic - that to do with the carnal lust; that which generates power, and that which comes with the accumulation of riches. The doubt is whether these are compatible or substitutive. From the face of it, I would be more inclined to go by the first thesis. Who yearns for power would leave money and women (or men - I mustn't be politically incorrect) in the 2nd place. And vice versa.
But the recent sex scandal, aptly in this case to cite the French (ex?) politician DSK, shows the exact contrary. Not just by the facts happened only days ago. According to an interview up till now not published, but took place last April, before the most recent scandal, the man himself had classified that his career had 3 principal threats: his Jewish blood, his fortune and women. Prophetic vision. But he continued to ride on the high speed train of life, indulging his taste for Porsches, expensive suites in luxury hotels, and women.

There had been little details to define what had caused him to do what he did, quite different from the usual blonde pin-ups the American soldiers pasted on the walls of their bunkers, or the voluptuous sex-symbols that truck drivers exhibit up the roof or dashboard of their vehicles.
They say there's no account for tastes. Don Juan Tenorio were said to be 'partial' to nuns, even though they go about not showing any of their possible alluring charm.
How mysterious and multi-faceted the human sexuality is. If only Freud should still be around to explain it all.
