They say in every period of time there's a phenomenon, mysterious or odd, and mostly inexplicable. Someone, out of the blue, would suddenly be hit with totally strange idea and said to himself 'Yes, I think I'll have a go at this.' Usually something challenging or very peculiar. Then before you know it, everybody is doing it. Not because the idea would benefit the mankind, improve you mind or health or anything, it just seems fun or daring or absorbing even though it's also weird or senseless.
What's the newest? 'Owling' it's baptised. Perhaps it's got something to do with the 1995 film 'Angels & Demons' in which Christopher Walken appeared in a scene crouching on a tombstone looking like an owl. He has even been nicknamed Christopher Owling Walken. You are supposed to take up the pose of an owl, and perched yourself on some unusual or unlikely surface, sharp, dangerous, precarious ... take photo of yourself and post it on the web. A whole lot of celebrities belong to the tribe of 'owls'. The viral phenomenon is such that they are listed in Wikipedia.
It's thought to be a spin-off of the 'Planking', with 27 million pages in Google. For that you should show yourself on Internet, lying face down in an unusual place: in the middle of a highway, a railway track, on a tree and even on a whale. There had been an arrest when someone bragged on Facebook his pose - on top of a police car; including there had been a mortal victim in Australia. A 20 year old young man intended to make his pose on his balcony and fell off from the 7th floor.
The most difficult one is 'Storking', the pose is like a stork, with one leg up in the air ... ! As for me, it's 'puzzling' and 'wondering', all I can come up with is - what a senseless waste of great energy, not to say dangerous, which could have been very productive personally or for the mankind.
