11th Oct 2011 Those Fallen From The Middle Class

Oct 11A
The crisis are still very much in evidence, dragging thousands of people who never before experience financial difficulties out of their till now fairly comfortable 'middle class' life style. Experts say there would be 300,000 unemployed without subsidy within 6 months.

The Spanish TV put on a programme interviewing some of the thus affected, most people complained of course, but the comments from 2 of them impressed me:

1. "In my life I have had so little but at times so much; I am not sad. No point crying about something you can do nothing to change, but to adapt."

2. "My life has drastically changed. What happened to me has served me to value much more the things which in the past I took for granted."

As to my own views, I feel that scientifically speaking, the so termed middle class does not exist; it's not an established concept, more a common description, a category if you like, of people who are neither rich as some nor poor as many. The classification is simply based on their consumption power, not on their patrimony.

The 'middle classes' are fragile. The moment their consuming power weakens, so are their status leading to social descension and degradation. Many Lords and Ladies are poor, but their noble class status remains.
