22nd Oct 2011 Good Things, Bad Things, & Tears Of Comfort

Bad things, however irrelevant, reach the masses through press, other media, even television. Very few good deeds, selfless actions done by ordinary people in the streets or anywhere, draw little or no attention and rarely, if ever, get mentioned let alone acknowledgement or just thanks.

One short open letter in the 'Readers' column of a local paper, did capture my attention. It was by a woman who stood during a bus ride, quietly crying (for personal reasons she said) while trying hard not to show it. A young man, a total stranger to her, offered her his seat and lightly padded her shoulder but without saying a word. When he got to his stop first, he bent down to whisper in her ear: 'Whatever had upset you so much, I sincerely hope there will be a prompt and good solution.' before he alighted the bus.

No huge sacrifice or heroic action; just a few kind words. And that alone had made her long held up tears finally dropped, but they were tears of comfort, she said, being shown such kindness from a total stranger.

I always feel good, gratified, when I read, see or hear some small acts, words or just silent gestures of kindness or compassion, being acknowledged & thanked by the so helped, benefited or as in this cased, comforted. I too therefore, feel comforted.
