12th May 2012 Interesting Food Facts For Thought

May 12
1) Apple is made of 25% air, that is why they float. (They do. I checked.)

2) Avocado has the highest protein and oil content of all fruits. (I love it, whatever they contain.)

3) Carrots were originally purple in colour, changing in the 17th Century to orange with newer varieties. (Should have kept it and add the orange for variety.)

4) Celery requires more calories to eat and digest than it contains. (One of my favourite vegetables, especially the Chinese ones, far more tender)

5) Cherries are a member of the rose family. (Maybe that's why one can eat rose too. Quite a few variety of flowers are used in Chinese cookery, also in Hawaiian and Indonesian food preparation.)

6) Corn always has an even number of ears. It only makes up about 8% of the weight in a box of corn flakes. (I didn't know that.)

7) Honey is the only edible food for humans that will never go bad. (Good to know something does last forever.)

8) Lemons contain more sugar than strawberries. (Surprising isn't it? Who would have thought?)

9) Peanuts are one of the ingredients in dynamite. (It's the nut I like least of all nuts; I even like the human variety.)

10) Pear is a fruit that ripens from the inside out. (Don't we all?)

Did you know that during a lifetime the average person eats about 35 tons of food; at least that's the statistics the experts came up with. (I would sure love to know how experts can come to that exact figure! Who goes around the world checking out and recording how much each and every person eats? How???)
