The
lyrics of an opera is an elite art like great literature. It requires
effort, deep understanding and knowledge. Today it is developing into
multiple directions, and today's public are more open minded and show
interests to follow any innovations. As it processes the same
integrating visual and audible art like any stage production as plays,
comedies and musicals. But for centuries it had adhered to the carved
in stone tradition and rigid discipline, which had now been boldly
taken in hand by a few ingenious and artistic brains to give opera a
new dimension never before attempted. Bold move, certainly. Risky,
maybe, some might even say outrageous.
The
world of opera had been small and exclusive, living as prisoner in
it's own history, with it's high society complexities and protocols,
it's anxiety of democratization, carrying the weight of it's tradition
on it's shoulders. What better time than summer, when work schedules
are lighter, spirits are freer, and minds are more open to adventures,
to experience something new?
The
main aim is that the opera of the 21st century should reach a much
wider public, not just the elite few. An alternative entertainment to
appeal to all ages and tastes. A number of the well known operas are
being considered, especially with the lighter and more timeless themes
like 'Taming of the Shrewd' would be staged shortly, followed by others popular old favorites but new to the younger generation.
Just
wonder, would 'Saturday Fever' become an opera piece? Or, 'Doctor
Dolittle'? 'Jusus Christ Super Star' surely? Maybe 'Cats'? It begins to
worry me a little now ...
