Flying
kites has been a great centuries old pastime, at least in China. Kite
surfing though is something rather new, at least in Spain. It's a
upgraded version of windsurfing, a fairly new sport practiced only in a
few coastal towns here. Tarifa in southern Spain provides optimal
conditions, also the beach of Sant Pere Pescador, on the other side of
Roses Bay, my present home. By car it takes less than half an hour.
Four Kite surfing schools offer both beginners and professionals assistance. There's also a private club with more than 140 members. It's goal is to make the fledging sport recognised and encouraged. Two beach areas of Sant Pere Pescador are available to kite surfers: the beach at the camp site 'Ballena Alegre' ( a cute name this one, in English it means Jolly or happy Whale ) and the beach section at the estuary of the river Fluvia.
Not
long ago, a 14 year old Gisela Polldo became the 1st world ranking in
kiting with her first kite experiments. A good advertisement for Sant
Pere even though Pulldo, aiming to become professional, currently trains
in Tarifa.
