When I first came to Spain initially for modelling assignments, long before I decided to make my home here, I was almost embarrassed by the amount of kisses received, being purely a tourist, a total stranger, yet even when you were introduced to the locals for the first time, most of them would kiss you on both cheeks instead of shaking your hand. I later discovered that this custom of theirs is more so in the south, than in Catalunya where my home is now. I have also long since got used to it; now it's almost an obligation for me as well to kiss just about anybody who automatically offers her cheeks! Men no, they will always be the ones to take the initiative, but very flattered and pleased if a female takes the lead first.
I can only say that, logically, these kisses are totally superficial, no more and no less than a handshake. Most of the time, it means nothing and I can accept it as a custom, but even so, too much of it gets rather tiresome. Especially, while on the subject, with the Belgians and the Dutch; always kiss on the cheeks 3 times - left, right, left!!! So, if you are being introduced to a family of 5 ...!!! To be honest I prefer shaking hands, especially when some over-enthusiastic kissers might leave your cheeks wet with their slurp, others might hold you too tight and too long, but I guess most girls experience that even outside of Spain.
What I can't stand is the Hollywood type kisses which go nowhere near your face or cheek, but barely plucking up the lips and kiss the air between the kisser and the kissed. It's so very silly and ridiculous apart from being totally meaningless. I would take that as insult more than a friendly gesture.
What about blowing a kiss you might say, as that doesn't touch you physically either. Ah, but that's indeed a friendly and loving gesture, to show you desire to kiss but hindered by distance to do so. While kissing the air when 2 people are merely inches apart ... !!! You see the difference?
