14th July 2011 What Makes My Day ...

July 14
A friend asked what would I consider to be a happy day. I said it would be a day when absolutely no problems of any kind occurs. He argued, saying that not having problems doesn't give one happiness; only what's generally expected; in other words an ordinary day, might even be said a boring day. I didn't agree with him but I didn't want to spend the evening arguing.

Alone later on, I thought about it. Sometimes, something fairly pleasant happens, like you hear from a friend long separated by distance, you chat on the phone to catch up with each other's news or lack of it, and when you put down the phone, you think 'Oh, that makes my day. I am so glad he called.' Or, when I had a boring day, but a silly TV comedy at the end of it made me laugh, and I would think: 'Oh, that makes up for such an insignificant day.' and I went to bed quite appeased.

For me, a good day needn't be one when I had an unexpected windfall or somebody pays me a real flattering compliment, or my new shoes didn't pinch me, or I found a super bargain getting something I had thought I couldn't afford. An uneventful day with no disaster of any kind, no sudden headaches, didn't argue with anybody ... and at the end of it I sleep well and had sweet dreams; in fact just an ordinary day with nothing unusual happened, is a good day in my book.
