20th May 2012 Tap Through History

Photobucket
Clac & Roll is a Spanish dance company which just presented their theatre performance called 'The Top Story Tour'. The show tells the story in very entertaining form the development of the Tap Dance throughout it's history. This visual comedy pays tribute to the great dancer of all the different eras, like Bill Robinson, Nicolas Brothers, Fred Astaire, and Gene Kelly ... but also introduces new tendencies. Tap Dance in Spanish is 'Claque'.

To create rhythm and sound the dancers Sergi Descayre and Basilio Gonzalez (director of the spectacle) use a variety of utensils: wooden shoes, sports shoes and rubber balls and, naturally, their bodies.

There had been a period when I was training as a dancer, principally for fun in the beginning, in various form of dancing, modern, stage performance, solo and in groups, as well as Tap. That is, until shortly after I discovered to my utter dismay, that my left foot could not tap anywhere near as well as the right, which made the tapping steps hard to coordinate in perfect harmony. A! pparently I suffered what's termed as a 'lazy ankle'I had to give up Tap which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Just when I was invited to become an assistant dance instructor in London's famous Pineapple Dance Studio, I had to leave for Saudi Arabia for 3 years. That puts an end to my dancing career. But I never miss a good dance performance any time anywhere if I could help it. Dancing remains my avid passion.
