I
am almost sure I wrote about him not long ago. He gave a most
entertaining performance last night in Roses, my home town, in the
annual Peralada Summer Festival at the casino garden. The very suave
singer & super pianist of New Orleans sparked off with his highly
sophisticated repertoire in vocal Jazz with undertone of pop and hints
of swing.
He
triumphed in the 80's as an elegant crooner but through the years had
combined the varied key essence of several other popular music of the
different periods, making it his own with his style and never given up
his very endearing crooner charm. He performed for the 1st time in
Spain in 1994, then in 2007 and each time he presented his concert with
almost a complete change of styles.
He
surprised the audience with his on stage appearance this time, in his
casual shirt hanging loose over the kind of multi-pocketed excursionist
type trousers, far from what I personally love to see, his usual sleek
and smart crooner elegance. The sophistication is left in the music,
refined, mesmerising but riveting. Right from the 1st song 'Won't you
come home, Bill Baily?', composition with more than a century's life
rooted from the Doxieland, immediately followed by a long &
magically juggled introduction of vibrant rendering on the piano.
He
has perfected his comparatively new facet of a comedian showman as
well, every wink and gesture at the right timing and the exact degree
of gag or humour. I saw his concert on Broadway (2011) on TV, most
impressed & entertained, but seeing him live on stage is quite
something else, just brilliant!
