Girl Friday - Secretary

Scenes showing bosses more or less lecherous, and secretaries more or less willing, are exploited to saturation in pocket novels and movies. More or less in real life too, no doubt. But one thing is these more or less unofficial license, quite another is that in present day reality, in Moscow or Kiev, where secretaries with such added requisite of 'intimate service' are exercised, as reported here in the news What can such report contribute the readers?

For a start, an angry reaction from an indignant reader. Apparently a group of ingenious companies in Moscow try to dodge the crisis by offering their rich clients the services of secretaries, who promise much more than seeing to their correspondence and booking airline tickets or restaurant tables, or sending their wives flowers. This female
reader from Moscow but now resides in Barcelona wrote to the paper to complain, pointing out that this kind of report should not appear in a serious paper as news of international value, more apt for the frivolous tabloid and 3rd rate gossip magazines.

Her view: 'Such news does not reflect the reality of the majority of people and their true life, only serves to foster the enormous cultural prejudice already exists.' Is it coincidence that the only reader that complained is Russian?

Not too long ago, the same paper also reported the new agreement between Russia and America the nuclear disarmament, the recuperation of the carnival in Moscow, or in February, the cancellation in the Russian capital of the Rossinya Tower (was going to be the highest in Europe) of Norman Foster. A mixed bag of news both light and serious.

Personally I think she overreacted a little. The paper as she pointed out is indeed a serious and reputable newspaper. Reporting what is true and actually happening is their aim and duty, as long as the factual reality backs up the report. News is not always pleasant or pleasing, because reality isn't. It doesn't mean it shouldn't reflect some controversial topics or, occasionally, the lighter side of life or reality.
