Just in case some people still unaware, as from April 2009, 36 selected chemists (famacias) located in 21 towns of the province of Barcelona, offer quick, free, and confidential HIV detection test service to anyone who requests it. At that time this was only a pioneer trial run. The result was known in just 20 minutes. The objective was to foster early diagnosis and interrupt the chain of transmissions. This is now extended in most big cities here.

The test is given only to people of over 16 years of age. It's aimed at those who are not accustomed to go to the other specified sanitary points. At that timethis service was not offered in Barcelona city itself because there were other organisations, like ONG, giving access to this examination since 2006, also offering advice against Aids and rapid tests of detection.

These chemists would have a distinctive sign and, during the 20 minutes of waiting for the result, the pharmacist would offer information, explanation, advice on Aids and it's prevention. He will accompany the visitor till the result is ready. In the case of being positive, he himself would make an appointment in a sanitary centre to confirm it.

The test has a 99.6% of reliability rate. The data of 2007 showed that 30% of the diagnosis were made too late, 12 months after the patients have contracted the disease, when the immune system is already weakened.

Another good thing the Government is doing.
