The King Kong Issue

I like many of the very old b/w films. Last night I saw the original 'King Kong' which somehow I missed before. That reminded me that, in 2008 and coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the birth, cinematographically speaking, of the worldfamous gorilla King Kong, a campaign here in Spain, with a collective solicitation from organisers of film & theatre festival organizers, requested to enter a new word 'kincon' (King Kong) officially in the dictionary, with definition: 'one who is desperately captivated with impossible love.'

The initiative is commendable and supported by an attractive website: kingkongparasiempre.com The request was directed to Ana Maria Matute, who is in charge of the 'K' section of the Academia, in the department of dictionaries. Since King Kong is internationally known, even though I am not exactly sure that the definition of it is apt, no doubt it is interesting enough to catch on ... 'Yep, that's him, always a KingKong, never a groom'.

Nobody, as far as I know, has any problems with the initiative with 'KinCon' except me it seems. Not that my opinion counts, nor it's important to me that it does or doesn't. My objection rests in the suggested name. Why KinCon? And not 'KingKong'? If it's one single word to be entered to the dictionary, to mean what they wanted it to mean, it will still be just one word but the significance is clearer, more so it is original & already known by millions of people all over the world, even the young who have never seen the original film, to connect the unconditional & impossible love of the gorilla for the girl he saved.

KinCon? Poor gorilla. Wouldn't be recognisable even by his own mother!
