There's
a museum for almost everything these days; soon enough would be
literally for everything. The newest is a museum for sausages! More
precisely for the 'Currywurst' (curry sausage) This museum in Berlin,
Germany, opened it's doors in 2009, displaying this sausage and tomato
sauce made with many different type of spices, the aroma of these is
notably in the air. How some sausages and sauces could fill up a museum
must have been quite a challenge. But there it is, you have to see it to
believe it.
The history of this sausage began at the end of the 40's, period of intense social upheaval in Germany. Since the recipe of this was created, the 4th of September in 1949 precisely by Herta Heuwer, devoted followers has never stopped growing. It's reported that close to 800 million of Currywurst are consumed per year, in Berlin alone the figure is around 70 million, at the price varying between €1.80 to €2.30.
They are often found, apart from some supermarkets, in street stores (Imbiss), food markets and food fairs all over the country. Usually served in a little carton tray together with a plastic fork. I have been to Germany many times, but have to confess that I could find many other typical German food I prefer.
Many politicians are fans of this high calorie goodie (1,000 in each) with the self-justified excuse no doubt, that their effort demanding job commands it. The ex-chancellor Gerhard Schroder is one of them. In his biography, it was revealed that he divorced his former wife Hillu, because she was a strict vegetarian and had prohibited him the Currywurst! I am not surprised, If I am married and my husband forbids me eating rice ...
Now the private company Edutainment International of Berlin, in collaboration with the Studio of the Architecture Kubix and the communication agency Atelier Markgraph, had set up this unusual museum in honour of and totally devoted to the Currywurst.
