2nd Dec 2011 How Much Is Superman Worth?

Dec 02B
This Superman is very old, born in 1938, number 1 issue of the series and it's worth $2.15 million (€1.6 million), the price paid yesterday in an on-line auction in the U.S. It was one of 100, believed to be the total number of the comic 1st copy of the 'Superman' saga. It was the highest ever paid price, with sort of mystery attached, as it was stolen 11 years ago from the house of film star Nicholas Cage in Los Angeles.

The comic cartoon was in almost impeccable condition, despite whatever peripeteia that it went through during more than a decade. Cage acquired the comic in 1995 paying an estimated sum of approximately $1 million (exact amount never disclosed). For Cage it was more than a fetiche, demonstrated by calling his son Kal EI, the original name of Superman before he was propelled to Earth.

This comic copy appeared a few months back in a rental book shop in Los Angeles amongst a row of magazines. It was not returned to it's rightful owner because apparently the star had collected at the time insurance payment already. It had since then been auction more than once, the last time another 1st number of Superman got $ 1.5 million last year.

When I was much younger, I used to draw a lot of comic cartoon figures and wrote little childish stories to go with them, or the other way round. Why didn't I have similar inspiration then to draw some Super this and that to secure a comfortable life? Mine were all about princes, princesses and sweeter than honey romances. I now take comfort to consider that love is priceless.
