At
the beginning of the 90's, Robert Redford played a millionaire in the
film 'Indecent Proposal', referring to his very unusual offer of a
millions dollars to a young couple with serious economic problems, in
exchange for the young man's beautiful wife spending one night with
him. That film's only merit was raising gossipy talks and debates on
morality versus economy. I can't help but seeing the similarity of the
very recent proposal of the project by the American magnate Sheldon
Adelson, who is planning to build what is now baptised as 'EuroVegas' -
An European version of Las Vegas - in Barcelona, or Madrid.
The
magnitude of the investment for this leisure complex of casinos,
hotels and 24 hour non-stop gaming is colossal and dazzling (16,900
million €). As excessive as the dispensation and exemption he demands to
pull the project off, turning the macro-complex into a totally
foreign ground that none of the current law in force can reach.
Although
the drowning economy of Spain at present is like that couple greatly
tempted, the Spanish must ask themselves up to what point they could
allow themselves to yield to the desperation. If one can buy a part of
the city legally with the condition that it would not be governed by
any law, a lawless city within a city in other words, how much would it
cost to buy yet another? If Adelson can, why not the company just 2
kilometres away from the casino? How much is the market price for a
kilo of legal tolerance or indulgence?
